Junior Scholars Training Seminar
Deadline: May 13, 2011

The National Council for Eurasian and East European Research and the East European Studies Program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars are soliciting applications for the twenty-fourth annual training seminar for junior scholars, to be held August 12-15, 2011. The sponsors will cover all transportation, accommodation, and meal costs.

Participants will present their research; discuss the works of other junior scholars; and exchange impressions of the state of the field with a group of senior scholars. JSTS successfully combines formal and informal meetings to promote a variety of intellectual exchanges. Activities include the following: individual presentations; constructive feedback and question/answer sessions; one-on-one meetings for junior scholars with senior scholars; advice regarding publishing; discussions about the state of the profession and obtaining employment in the field; and various social activities.

Selected applicants are expected to submit a five-page paper no later than July 1, 2011 on the sources and methodology of their report and the wider significance of their work. (In other words, what was researched; how it was researched; and what it means.) This paper will serve as the basis for discussion at the seminar.

These scholarships are available to US citizens only. Graduate students enrolled in an advanced academic or professional degree at a US university are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to those who have completed all requirements for their Ph.D. except the dissertation and scholars who have received their Ph.D.s within the past year in any field. Aesthetic Politics in St. Petersburg: Skyline at the Heart of Political Opposition

Alexei Yurchak, University of California, Berkeley

This working paper focuses on the plans to construct a skyscraper in St Petersburg, Russia, known originally as Gazprom-City and recently renamed into Okhta Center, and on the controversy that developed around these plans. The paper uses the skyscraper debates as a lens to discuss a particular "aesthetic politics" of St Petersburg, the meaning of "world cities" and "global architecture" in Russian and international contexts, post-Soviet forms of political and corporate governance, the mobilization of civic opposition to such projects and the ability of such urban protests to translate into a more unified and politically oriented opposition than has been possible in other contexts in Russia.
